An underground southern Illinois coal mine will close by the end of the year. Knight Hawk Coal says the 50 workers at the Royal Falcon mine near the boundary of Franklin and Jackson counties will be offered transfers to the company's Prairie Eagle site near Cutler, in nearby Perry County.

An impaired driver careened off the side of Dillinger Road early Wednesday and was injured when his Sports Utility Vehicle flipped over, the Jackson County Sheriff Department reported.

A hiking adventure turns into a search and rescue operation in Jackson County. A Murphysboro man, his 13-year-old daughter and his 9-year-old niece are safe Monday morning after getting lost in the Little Grand Canyon in southern Illinois.
